Ruben Amorim has admitted that he should consider stepping down as Manchester United’s manager if the team’s poor league form continues into next season.
United’s dismal end to the current campaign reached another low on Sunday, as they were defeated 2-0 at Old Trafford by a West Ham team that hadn’t won in their previous eight matches.
In his post-match remarks, Amorim questioned his own future, stating, “We are losing the feeling that we are a massive club. It’s supposed to be a disaster to lose at home.”
He added, “If we are no longer afraid of losing as Manchester United, and we don’t feel that fear, that’s the most dangerous thing a big club can experience.”
Since January 26, Amorim’s side have only managed victories against relegated teams Ipswich and Leicester, and are currently enduring their worst winless run in the Premier League, having gone seven matches without a victory.
“Everyone here needs to think seriously about a lot of things,” Amorim said. “People are focused on the [Europa League] final, but the final is not the issue. There are bigger concerns. I’m talking about myself, the club’s culture, and the culture within the team. We need to change that.”
He described the current moment as “decisive in the history of the club,” adding, “We need to be strong and brave this summer because next season cannot be like this. If we start next season with the same attitude, we should give space for others to take over.”
On a points-per-game basis, United are on track for their worst tally since their relegation in the 1930-31 season, where they would have finished with just 29 points in a 42-game campaign.
With 39 points, United sit 16th in the league, ahead of only Europa League final opponents Tottenham and the three teams that have already been relegated.
Amorim expressed his embarrassment over the current situation, acknowledging that regardless of the result in the Europa League final against Tottenham, substantial changes like those suggested by Ralf Rangnick during his brief spell as interim manager in 2021 are necessary for the club to move forward. If these changes don’t happen, Amorim knows his job is at risk.
