Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo is optimistic that striker Taiwo Awoniyi may be back with the team next week, following emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine. The Nigerian forward remains hospitalised after suffering the injury in a collision with the goalpost during Forest’s 2-2 draw against Leicester City.
The incident, which occurred late in the match, has reignited discussions over the controversial delayed offside rule, introduced in 2020, with many pointing to it as a contributing factor in the injury.
“He’s expected to stay in the hospital for at least five days under observation,” Nuno said. “I’ll try to visit him soon. He’s with his family and in good care.”
Nuno confirmed the operation was successful, though Awoniyi’s recovery is still being closely monitored.
“Surgery went well, thank God. He’s being watched closely now, and we’re just waiting for the doctors to approve visits,” he added.
Despite his absence, Awoniyi remains in close contact with his teammates via group chats, and the squad is planning a tribute during their upcoming match against West Ham.
“The players are always chatting with him. He’s okay—just needs time. Hopefully, he’ll be with us again next week. He’s had a tough season, and we’re all heartbroken for him,” Nuno said.
Awoniyi was injured while stretching to finish a low cross that could have sealed victory for Forest unaware he was clearly offside. He managed to finish the match, playing seven more minutes before being taken for surgery the next day.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Forest and Super Eagles teammate Ola Aina confirmed he had reached out to the striker.
“I sent him a message, like everyone else. I’ve heard he’s recovering well, so hopefully we’ll hear from him soon.”
Aina didn’t hold back his frustration with the delayed offside rule, blaming it for the avoidable collision.
“You could see it was offside right away. The flag should’ve gone up. Everyone saw it—Anthony [Elanga] was clearly off. It could have prevented all of this.”
The incident has intensified criticism of IFAB’s guideline, which permits assistant referees to delay flagging for offside only when a clear goal-scoring chance is developing.
Earlier this season, Awoniyi also sustained a broken nose during an FA Cup clash with Exeter City. Between injuries and competition from Chris Wood, he’s played just 402 Premier League minutes this campaign.
