Serie A’s penultimate weekend delivered fireworks, and not just from the goals. As the league heads into its final round, the dugouts will be missing some familiar faces.
Top managers Antonio Conte, Simone Inzaghi, and Sergio Conceicao have all been handed suspensions after being sent off in a stormy weekend that saw tempers flare across Italy’s top flight.
Napoli still cling to a slim one-point lead over Inter following Sunday’s dramatic fixtures, where nine games were played simultaneously. They face Cagliari in the finale, while Inter take on Como, both sides still in the hunt for the Scudetto.
But the headlines weren’t just about the title race. Conte was shown red during Napoli’s goalless draw with Parma, Inzaghi was dismissed in Inter’s 2-2 thriller with Lazio, and Conceicao received his marching orders during Roma’s 3-1 win over Milan.
The Serie A disciplinary committee has since acted:
- Conte receives a one-match touchline ban, a €5,000 fine, and an official warning.
- Inzaghi, Conceicao, and Lazio’s Marco Baroni each get one-match suspensions and €5,000 fines.
- Christian Chivu (Inter youth coach) and Sergio Macron (Udinese) are suspended for one match but avoided monetary penalties.
- Juan Miranda of Bologna will miss two matches—one now and the opening day of the 2025-26 season—for violent conduct.
- Milan forward Santiago Gimenez was fined €15,000 and suspended for one game after his red card against Roma.
A host of players were also suspended for accumulated yellow cards: Edoardo Goldaniga, Jay Idzes, Thomas Kristensen, Sandi Lovric, and Tete Morente will all sit out the final day.
Stadium behavior also drew fines:
- Lecce were hit hardest with a €7,000 sanction for smoke bombs.
- Genoa and Hellas Verona will each pay €4,000, and Roma €3,000 for similar disturbances.
- Parma got a €1,500 fine after a fan tossed a lighter onto the pitch.
- Inter were fined €1,000 due to plastic bottles thrown from the stands.
As the curtain prepares to fall on the 2024-25 Serie A season, the drama clearly isn’t waiting for the final act.
