Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are set for a high-stakes showdown in Bilbao, with more than just silverware on the line. The UEFA Europa League final at San Mamés offers not only glory but also a substantial financial windfall—and a lifeline to Champions League football.
Both clubs successfully maneuvered through the newly revamped league phase, securing top-eight finishes to skip the playoff round. After intense knockout clashes—United overcoming Athletic Club and Spurs seeing off Bodo/Glimt—the two sides now stand on the brink of continental triumph.
According to UEFA, both finalists are guaranteed just over £5.9 million for reaching the final. However, victory will nearly double that, with the winners taking home an additional £5.06 million. In total, the Europa League champions will collect nearly £11 million—roughly half the amount awarded to the Champions League winners, who will pocket £21.1 million.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Each of the 36 teams involved in the group stage was allocated a base payment of £3.63 million, plus performance-based bonuses around £380,000 per win and £126,500 for each draw. With strong group-stage showings, both United and Spurs have already earned well into seven figures.
But the money matters go far beyond tonight. Neither team has secured European qualification through the Premier League, meaning a win is crucial to avoid a European absence next season. The Europa League champions automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage—an entry that could net the club an additional £100 million in revenue depending on their progress.
United boss Ruben Amorim, aiming to secure his third trophy as manager, acknowledged the gravity of the occasion. “Winning this tournament alone doesn’t do justice to what our fans have given us,” he said. “But this final means everything—we’re ready to fight and reward that support.”
For both clubs, it’s more than just a trophy. It’s about validation, redemption, and the promise of a brighter European future—with millions riding on 90 minutes in Bilbao.
