Chelsea have finalized the signing of highly-rated teenage centre-back Mamadou Sarr from French side RC Strasbourg.
The 19-year-old French youth international has committed his future to the Blues with a long-term deal running until 2033.
Sarr, who featured in 28 matches for Strasbourg last season, played an important role in helping the club secure a European spot. His consistent performances earned him a place in France’s U20 squad, and now, he’s set for the next step in his career at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea officially welcomed the young defender on Monday with a message on their website that read: “Welcome to Chelsea, Mamadou!”
The west London club has been active in the transfer market already. Deals have been concluded for Sporting Lisbon’s Dario Essugo and Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
Chelsea’s transfer activity doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. The club is reportedly exploring options, including a move for AC Milan’s first-choice goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
Sarr’s arrival also makes him eligible for Chelsea’s squad in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States. The Blues begin their campaign against LAFC on June 16.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s talented winger Jamie Gittens is ongoing. Sky Germany reports that an opening bid of €35 million (£29.5 million) has been turned down, with Dortmund valuing the England U21 star between €50-60 million (£42-50 million).
Gittens is said to be eager to make the move and join Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup, especially with the club in need of reinforcements out wide following their decision not to sign Jadon Sancho on a permanent basis.
