Tottenham have submitted a major offer in their push to sign Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, overtaking Manchester United’s efforts in the race for the in-demand forward.
New Spurs manager Thomas Frank is eager to reunite with the Cameroon international, whom he coached at Brentford. Tottenham’s latest bid is valued at £70million, consisting of £65million upfront and £5million in potential bonuses. That tops United’s previous package worth £60million in total.
Despite United being Mbeumo’s first choice, their failure to strike a deal with Brentford has opened the door for Spurs. Frank is banking on his personal relationship with the player and the promise of Champions League football to lure him to north London.
Mbeumo had a standout campaign last season, scoring 20 Premier League goals and registering seven assists. Only Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Alexander Isak scored more than him in the league.
United’s two previous offers failed to meet Brentford’s £70million valuation. With Tottenham stepping in, their proposal could prove decisive. The Red Devils are not expected to go higher, especially after investing over £60million in Matheus Cunha.
One advantage United still hold is their wage offer. Mbeumo would reportedly earn between £150,000 and £175,000 per week at Old Trafford, potentially rising to £200,000 with performance bonuses. In contrast, Spurs’ offer is said to be closer to £130,000 to £140,000 a week, which would require the club to stretch their wage structure.
Brentford are aware that Mbeumo, who has one year left on his deal with an option for an additional season, is ready for a new challenge. While the club remain firm on their asking price, they acknowledge that the forward is prepared to move on after five years in west London.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy views Mbeumo as a high-profile signing to usher in the Thomas Frank era. Whether the pull of a former manager and Champions League football is enough to sway the player remains to be seen, but the competition for Mbeumo’s signature is clearly heating up.
