The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicked off with a goalless draw between Inter Miami and Al Ahly as over 60,000 fans filled Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium to witness the opening clash of the newly expanded tournament.
The Egyptian giants Al Ahly dominated the first half and had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Trezeguet stepped up for a penalty. But Inter Miami’s Oscar Ustari denied him, pulling off a brilliant save to keep the scores level. Ustari, who has only recently cemented his place as Miami’s first-choice goalkeeper, proved to be the difference maker, producing a series of top-class saves throughout the match.
Despite featuring global icons Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, it was Ustari who emerged as the night’s standout performer. He recorded eight saves in total, more than Miami managed shots on target, highlighting the defensive frailties of the MLS side, especially against Al Ahly’s aggressive attack.
Messi, just days removed from international duty with Argentina, looked livelier in the second half. He hit the crossbar in stoppage time and created a late chance for Fafà Picault, but Miami couldn’t convert any of their few chances.
For Al Ahly, it was a frustrating result. They carved open Miami’s defense multiple times in the opening half. Emam Ashour and Wessam Abou Ali threatened early, and Ashour’s disallowed goal for offside added to their missed chances. A win would have put them in a strong position in a competitive Group A that also includes FC Porto and Palmeiras.
The match may not have delivered fireworks, but the packed stadium offered a positive sign for FIFA, which had been concerned about attendance. While there were empty seats here and there, the turnout was strong, boosted significantly by Al Ahly’s passionate fanbase who matched and even outvoiced the Inter Miami supporters.
