But beyond his exploits on the pitch, Peter Rufai was a man of humility, class, and vision. After hanging his gloves, he continued to serve the game he loved by nurturing young talents through the Staruf Football Academy, and lending his voice to sports development initiatives nationwide. He was a mentor, a motivator, and a true patriot who never hesitated to use his platform for positive change.
Dodo Mayana, as he was fondly called, was also known for his vibrant personality, his ever-present smile, and his unwavering love for Nigeria. He brought honor to the country not just as a footballer, but as a cultural icon who proved that you can reach the top and still remain grounded in values.
To his family, we say: thank you for sharing him with us. We can only imagine the depth of your pain, but please know that the nation mourns with you. You are not alone. You raised a giant, one whose name will live on in Nigerian history books and in the hearts of millions who witnessed his brilliance.
To his former teammates, coaches, and fans around the world, this is a time to remember his greatness and to carry forward the spirit of excellence he embodied.
