Bayelsa Queens received praise but no financial compensation as the Bayelsa State Government celebrated their historic sixth Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) title win.
Governor Douye Diri, represented by Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, hosted the team at a special reception organized to acknowledge their success. The Deputy Governor commended the team for their grit and determination, calling them “true champions” and a pride to the state.
He applauded the team’s unbeaten record during the regular season and described their league title as a deserved reward for their commitment and discipline.
“We are proud of what these girls have achieved. They’ve shown that hard work and unity pay off,” the Deputy Governor stated.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Sports Commissioner Daniel Igali, club chairman, technical staff led by Coach Whyte Ogbonda, and the players themselves.
While no cash prize was announced, the government encouraged the team to keep pushing, especially as they gear up to represent Nigeria at the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League. This will be their second appearance at the continental level, having finished third in the 2022 edition in Morocco.
The celebration lacked a monetary gesture but emphasized recognition and encouragement for future glory on both national and continental fronts.
