The Federal Government has promised cash rewards to Nigerian athletes competing at the ongoing CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championship in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In a morale-boosting announcement made on Day 2 of the competition, the National Sports Commission (NSC) revealed that gold medalists will receive ₦1,000,000, silver medalists ₦750,000, and bronze medalists ₦500,000 for their efforts.
NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, were present at the venue to cheer the athletes and personally deliver the news of the incentive package. Dikko praised the commitment of the athletes, saying, “Their drive and passion are evident in every race and event. We are proud of them and will keep rewarding excellence.”
He further stressed the need to constantly motivate athletes: “Our athletes deserve more than just applause. When they put in the work and fly our flag high, the least we can do is show appreciation beyond words.”
Olopade, who also chairs the Local Organising Committee, emphasized athlete welfare, stating that consistent support is vital to building future champions for events like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
Officials from the Athletics Federation hailed the initiative, noting it as a significant step towards developing young talent and reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to athletics excellence on the continental and global stage.
