The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has issued a directive to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF): pay the Super Falcons their dues before touching a single kobo from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 prize money.
In a statement shared with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana on Saturday, Dikko revealed that the NFF had been instructed to release 30% of the prize money to the players and officials as their rightful share.
“The players must receive their 30% cut first,” Dikko stated plainly. “It’s what they’ve earned, and it must be honoured before anything else is considered.”
Regardless of the outcome of their upcoming semi-final match against either South Africa or Senegal, Nigeria is guaranteed at least $300,000 for finishing fourth in the tournament. That payout increases to $350,000 if they clinch third place, $500,000 for silver, and a whopping $1 million if they secure their 10th WAFCON crown.
Beyond the CAF prize money split, the NFF is also expected to settle other financial commitments owed to the team, including match bonuses and daily allowances- payments separate from the prize fund.
Meanwhile, after almost two weeks of delay and public frustration, the Super Falcons have finally received their official WAFCON kits from Nike. The gear, which had been stuck in Moroccan customs for 12 days, arrived at the team’s base in Morocco earlier this weekend.
A camp source confirmed that the kits were delivered still sealed in boxes and distributed to the players immediately. The delay had previously forced the team to train and compete in older jerseys, drawing criticism over the federation’s handling of logistics.
