President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, after their 2 1 victory over South Africa in the semi finals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The result confirmed Nigeria’s place in the final and moved them closer to winning a 10th continental title.
The Super Falcons defeated the defending champions in a closely contested match that highlighted their experience, tactical discipline and ability to perform under pressure. Nigeria converted their chances efficiently while keeping South Africa from finding a way back into the game.
Following the win, President Tinubu posted a message on his verified X account to applaud the players and encourage them to finish the job in the final. His message read:
“Well deserved. Congratulations to our Super Falcons. Your semi final victory over South Africa was nothing short of excellent. It was a display of strength, talent and the indomitable Nigerian spirit. You have made the nation proud. Now go for the trophy. We are all behind you.”
This victory means the Super Falcons have reached the final of the competition for the 14th time in their history. Nigeria remains the most successful team in the history of the tournament with nine previous titles. Their last WAFCON trophy came in 2018. In 2022, they were eliminated in the semi finals by Morocco on penalties.
Defeating South Africa was also significant because the Banyana Banyana had beaten Nigeria in the group stage of the last edition before going on to win the tournament. The win has been seen as a form of payback and a statement of intent.
Coach Justine Madagu and his players have faced growing expectations during the tournament but appear to be gaining momentum at the right time. The Nigeria Football Federation has also praised the team and renewed calls have emerged for better investment in women’s football across the country.
With just one match remaining, the Super Falcons have the chance to extend their record to 10 WAFCON titles. They now await the winner of the other semi final to determine their opponent in the final.
President Tinubu’s endorsement has added to the growing wave of support from fans at home and abroad. The team is expected to continue full preparations ahead of the decisive match, with millions of Nigerians hopeful that the trophy will return to Abuja.
