Enyimba International FC has come out swinging in response to former Super Eagles forward Brown Ideye’s claims of poor treatment during his time at the club, dismissing his statements as “misleading and unprofessional.” But behind the bold front, troubling financial concerns continue to haunt the Nigerian giants.
In an official press release issued Thursday, the club emphasized that Ideye was given VIP treatment during his brief return with a ₦1 million monthly paycheck, ₦65,000-per-night hotel stay, paid flights for away matches, and special bonuses others didn’t receive.
“He was welcomed with respect and prestige,” Enyimba said. “But rather than serve as a role model, he contributed little on the pitch and stirred unrest within the squad, netting just five goals.”
Yet, while the club paints a picture of fairness and generosity, investigations by some media outlets reveal much deeper problem; one the statement conveniently ignores: unpaid salaries and bonuses owed to a growing number of players, including those released after the 2024/25 season.
Former Stars Still Owed Millions:
Documents and insider sources confirm that at least five senior players including ex-captain Alalibo Somiari, Ezeh Chidera, Nwaodu Chukwudi Justin, Onyemaechi Austin, and Francis Odinaka are yet to be fully paid months after their exits. All five left on mutual terms earlier in the year.
Following pressure from agents and union reps, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reportedly brokered a settlement in May. But with just a third of the agreed amount disbursed by July, players are left in limbo some now clubless and financially stranded.
Meanwhile, players in Enyimba’s feeder team are reportedly entering their fourth month without pay. Senior team salaries were cleared last month, but the youth ranks remain neglected sparking concern over how the club prioritizes its internal operations.
Ideye, who returned to the club for a second stint last season, took to social media to vent his frustration:
“Because I have money, I should forget what I’m owed? Pay me and the other boys our match bonuses. The season ended in May, nothing has come.”
The former West Brom striker had earlier revealed that players received as little as ₦7,000 for feeding during away trips which is a damning indictment of a club that once ruled the continent.
Despite finishing 5th in the NPFL last season with 55 points, Enyimba’s off-field stability is being called into question. Fans and stakeholders are beginning to turn their gaze toward club chairman Kanu Nwankwo, who took charge in 2023 amid promises of reform.
Leadership Under Fire:
While the club insists that a structured bonus system and management-backed cash rewards are in place, many say these promises mean little when players are still chasing overdue wages.
“Reputation isn’t just about trophies , it’s about integrity. And Enyimba is failing that test,” said a club source who requested anonymity.
For now, the club continues to deny any wrongdoing. But the noise around Ideye’s accusations is growing louder and trust us to keep keep tracking any new developments, including possible NPFL or NFF intervention.
