MLS Suspends Messi and Alba Over All-Star Game Absence
Major League Soccer has handed a one-match suspension to Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba after both players failed to appear at this week’s MLS All-Star festivities.
The duo, despite being voted into the All-Star squad, missed key events including Tuesday’s Skills Challenge and Wednesday’s showcase match against a select team from Mexico’s Liga MX.
According to league regulations, any All-Star participant who misses the match without proper authorization faces a mandatory suspension. MLS enforced that rule on Friday, confirming that both Messi and Alba will sit out Inter Miami’s clash with FC Cincinnati on Saturday night.
Inter Miami’s managing owner Jorge Mas expressed frustration over the league’s stance, stating:
“Messi is extremely upset with the decision.”
He added,
“I don’t agree with the rule, and I’ve made my position clear to the commissioner.”
The absence of the World Cup winner and his former Barcelona teammate will be a significant blow for Inter Miami as they aim to maintain momentum in the league.
