Esther Okoronkwo has been named the Super Falcons’ Fans’ Player of the Tournament following her outstanding performance at the recently concluded 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The announcement came after a fan-based poll conducted on the official X handle of the Super Falcons, where supporters cast their votes to honour the most impactful player of Nigeria’s historic title-winning campaign. Okoronkwo emerged as the clear fan favorite, surpassing stiff competition from five of her high-performing teammates.
Among those nominated were team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named the official Player of the Tournament by the Confederation of African Football, CAF, as well as Jennifer Echegini, Ashleigh Plumptre, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Chiwendu Ihezuo. Each of them made significant contributions to the team’s success, but it was Okoronkwo’s consistent brilliance on the field that won the hearts of fans across the nation.
Throughout the tournament, the 27-year-old forward delivered a string of impressive performances that proved vital to Nigeria’s campaign. Representing AFC Toronto, Okoronkwo registered two goals and six assists in six matches, a tally that not only showcased her finishing ability but also her playmaking vision and selfless teamwork. Her impact in the final third was undeniable, and her attacking presence helped drive the Super Falcons to their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
In recognition of her superb contributions, Okoronkwo was also included in the CAF Best XI of the tournament, cementing her status as one of the most influential players in the competition. Her creativity, work rate, and sharp decision-making under pressure made her a standout performer in a tournament filled with elite talent. This fans’ award adds another feather to her cap and serves as a testament to the admiration she commands among supporters of the Super Falcons, who continue to celebrate the team’s latest continental triumph. With this achievement, Esther Okoronkwo not only etched her name into the hearts of fans but also solidified her place among Africa’s elite female footballers.
