Nigeria’s Remo Stars and Rivers United Face Tough Challenges in CAF Champions League Group Stage
The reigning Nigeria Premier Football League champions, Remo Stars, along with runners-up Rivers United, are set to face demanding paths in the group stage of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.
Rivers United will begin their campaign by taking on RDC 1 from DR Congo in the opening round. Should they succeed, they are likely to meet either AC Leopards of Congo or Mozambique’s Black Bulls in the next phase. The Port Harcourt-based club, known for their consistent participation in CAF tournaments, are eager to secure a spot back in the group stage.
On the other hand, Remo Stars will have to get past Comoros’ US Zilimadjou in their initial fixture before a potential showdown with the South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns. The Sundowns are one of the tournament favorites and boast a Champions League title from 2016.
Both Rivers United and Remo Stars face challenging second preliminary round ties in the competition. The second round is scheduled to take place between October 17 and 26, with the winners advancing to the lucrative group stage, which begins on November 21.
The 2025/26 CAF Interclub season will continue through May 2026, culminating in the finals.
In a boost for Nigerian clubs, CAF has increased the participation fees for the Champions League and Confederation Cup to $100,000 (approximately ₦152.9 million) per team. This guarantees Rivers United and Remo Stars a significant financial reward as they embark on their continental journeys.
