Crystal Palace claimed the 2025 FA Community Shield after overcoming Premier League champions Liverpool 3-2 on penalties, following a thrilling 2-2 draw at Wembley on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Dean Henderson once again proved to be Palace’s hero between the posts, repeating his penalty-saving heroics from the FA Cup final earlier this year. Mohamed Salah blasted Liverpool’s opening spot kick over the bar, while Henderson denied both Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Substitute Justin Devenny sealed the win with a powerful final penalty, securing Palace’s third straight victory at Wembley.
Liverpool made a dream start, with new signing Hugo Ekitike finishing superbly in the fourth minute after linking up with record signing Florian Wirtz. Palace hit back midway through the first half when Jean-Philippe Mateta converted from the spot after Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr.
The Reds regained the advantage through Jeremie Frimpong, whose looping cross sneaked in off the post. The goal came just as fans paid tribute to Diogo Jota, wearing his number 20 shirt, following news of the Portugal forward’s passing.
Palace refused to back down, with Eberechi Eze and Sarr causing constant problems on the break. Sarr eventually levelled the score again in the 77th minute, slotting past Alisson to set up a tense finale.
There was late drama when Palace appealed for handball against Mac Allister, but VAR sided with Liverpool. Devenny almost grabbed a stoppage-time winner before the match was decided from the spot where his emphatic finish wrapped up another Wembley triumph for the Eagles.
