Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles crashed out of the 2024 African Nations Championship in devastating fashion, suffering a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Sudan on Tuesday, August 12 in Zanzibar.
It started with hope when Nigeria thought they had taken the lead, only for the referee to rule it out for offside. Things quickly unraveled. In the 25th minute, defender Lurwanu Ngenge’s own goal handed Sudan the opener. Moments before the break, Walieldin Khidir doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after sloppy defending.
Coach Éric Chelle rang the changes for the second half, but Sudan kept piling on the misery. Yousif Ahmed struck in the 50th minute, before Abdelrahman Tabanja netted twice in the space of seven minutes to complete the rout.
The result leaves Nigeria rock bottom of Group D with no points and no goals from two matches, following their earlier 1-0 loss to Senegal. It is their heaviest CHAN defeat since Morocco beat them 4-0 in the 2018 final.
With the victory, Sudan, led by former Ghana boss Kwesi Appiah, are on the brink of a quarter-final spot while Nigeria bow out at the group stage for only the second time in their history.
