Chelsea have chosen to honor the memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva by donating part of their FIFA Club World Cup winnings to the players’ families.
The Portuguese siblings lost their lives in a tragic car accident earlier this year. Although neither played for Chelsea, their friendship with several Blues players, especially forward Pedro Neto, left a strong emotional bond.
Chelsea recently lifted the expanded FIFA Club World Cup trophy after a 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The triumph brought the club around €115 million in total earnings, with about €15.5 million (£11.4m) allocated as bonuses for the squad.
In a show of solidarity, both the players and the club management agreed that part of that bonus would be sent to the Jota and Silva families. The move has been widely praised as a rare display of compassion in top level football, underlining that the sport’s greatest victories are not always measured in trophies.
