Bayern Munich have officially announced that their attempt to secure Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson on loan has broken down, with the striker now set to return to Stamford Bridge.
The Bundesliga giants believed they had wrapped up a deal after striking terms with Chelsea earlier in the week. Jackson had already travelled to Germany, arriving in Munich to undergo the final stages of the move. The plan was for him to join up with Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of their next round of fixtures.
But just as the finishing touches were being put on the deal, Chelsea suffered an untimely setback in their Premier League clash with Fulham. New signing Liam Delap, who was expected to be one of the club’s striking options this season, pulled up with a hamstring injury during the first half of the Blues’ 2-0 win. That injury immediately changed the outlook for Chelsea, who decided they could not afford to lose another striker from their ranks.
As a result, Chelsea executives quickly pulled the plug on Jackson’s transfer, despite Bayern having everything ready for the player’s unveiling.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl shed light on the situation after his team edged Augsburg 3-2 on Saturday.
“Chelsea informed us this morning that they no longer wish to let the player leave,” Eberl confirmed. “We had agreed on the terms of a loan yesterday, and Nicolas was already in Munich preparing to complete the process. Unfortunately, we now have to send him back.”
The collapse will come as a major disappointment for Bayern, who had identified Jackson as a key addition to bolster their attack. For Chelsea, however, the move underscores their growing concerns over depth in forward positions, especially with Delap sidelined and the season just getting underway.
The development also raises fresh questions about Chelsea’s summer transfer strategy. While they had been willing to sanction Jackson’s exit, circumstances forced them to reverse course within 24 hours, highlighting the unpredictable nature of modern football deals.
For now, Jackson faces the prospect of returning to London, where he will continue competing for a place under Enzo Maresca, rather than beginning a new chapter in Germany.
