Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has urged his teammates to remain focused on the immediate task at hand as Nigeria heads into a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying double-header.
The three-time African champions will welcome Rwanda to the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 6 before making the trip to Bloemfontein to square up against South Africa at the Free State Stadium on September 9.
Ndidi admitted the team has struggled for form in earlier games but insisted the players are determined to put things right.
“It’s not been easy, especially after recent results,” Ndidi said. “We know the situation we are in, but we are working hard, staying focused and taking it step by step. Right now, the Rwanda match is everything.”
Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with seven points from six matches. With only four fixtures remaining, victories in both encounters are crucial to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
While many see South Africa as the sterner test because of their quality and home advantage, Ndidi made it clear that Rwanda cannot be overlooked.
“People talk about South Africa, but there is no South Africa clash if we don’t win against Rwanda,” he added. “This is the game we cannot afford to drop. Once we get it right, then we can think of the next one.”
On paper, Nigeria are favourites, but recent inconsistency means the clash in Uyo carries extra pressure. A win would not only lift spirits in the camp but also restore belief among fans and send a strong warning to group rivals.
Failure, however, could leave the Super Eagles’ qualification hopes hanging in the balance and give Rwanda a famous upset to build on.
