Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that midfielder Romeo Lavia and defender Benoît Badiashile will not feature in the club’s Premier League fixture against Brentford on Saturday night.
Speaking to the media in his pre-match press conference, Maresca explained that both players are still recovering from their respective injuries and will need more time before being considered for selection. He stressed that although their progress has been encouraging, they are not yet fit enough to rejoin the squad.
“Romeo is still not ready to play and the same goes for Benoît,” the Italian said. “They are both very close to returning but unfortunately they will not be available for the match tomorrow.”
Chelsea travel into the weekend encounter on the back of a 2-0 victory over Fulham in their previous outing, a result that maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign. The Blues currently occupy second place in the Premier League table after three rounds of matches, trailing only Liverpool at the top.
The absence of Lavia and Badiashile means Maresca will once again have to rely on the depth of his squad as Chelsea look to continue their strong opening to the season and keep pace with the early leaders.
