Former Chelsea captain and club legend John Terry has shared his honest opinion on the Blues’ chances in the Premier League this season, and he does not believe they are ready to compete for the title.
Speaking in an interview with talkSPORT, Terry explained that the main challenge for Chelsea is not talent or energy but a lack of experience across the squad. He argued that when competing against teams who have consistently fought for top honours in recent years, such as Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal, the difference often comes down to players who have been through tough title races before and know how to handle the pressure.
Chelsea have made a solid start to the new campaign, recording two wins and one draw in their first three matches. That form has lifted the mood among supporters, who are hopeful of seeing further progress under the current project. The club is also carrying momentum from last season, when they lifted the Europa Conference League trophy and secured a return to the Champions League, an achievement that was widely seen as an important step back toward the elite level.
Terry, however, believes that the journey is still a work in progress. He said that although the squad is full of quality and youth, the lack of seasoned leaders could prove costly in a long Premier League campaign. In his words, “I do not think Chelsea have enough experience in their squad to challenge Liverpool. I also do not want to put unnecessary pressure on the team, but for me, this season’s title is Liverpool’s to lose.”
The former England international, who lifted five Premier League titles during his career at Stamford Bridge, made it clear that his comments are not intended to discourage but to set realistic expectations. He added, “We are a young squad and I am proud of the direction the club is heading, but to be truthful I do not think we will win the league this year. That does not mean we will not compete. I believe we will be right in the mix, pushing hard, and showing that we can go toe-to-toe with the best.”
Chelsea’s next test will come on Saturday when they face Brentford in the Premier League. Supporters will be watching closely to see if the Blues can maintain their strong start and continue building confidence for the long campaign ahead.
