Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that several of his players are struggling with confidence issues, describing the situation as a “self-esteem crisis” following his side’s 0-0 draw with rivals Porto.
The Portuguese giants faced off in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season, but the encounter produced few clear-cut chances as both teams settled for a point. The result leaves Benfica four points adrift of league leaders Porto, intensifying pressure on Mourinho as he continues to reshape the team’s mentality and form.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Mourinho said his tactical approach was influenced by the psychological state of some of his players. According to him, the team is still developing the belief and aggression required to dominate big games.
“I think Benfica has its own characteristics,” Mourinho explained. “FC Porto have players with great power and the ability to attack spaces, something we currently lack. We had to be pragmatic, to create danger without losing control of the match.
“Right now, the team is suffering from low confidence. I found three, four, maybe even five players who are going through a self-esteem crisis. It’s affecting how they play, how they make decisions, and how they express themselves on the field.”
The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager, who took over Benfica earlier this year, emphasized that rebuilding the players’ confidence will be one of his key priorities going forward.
“This team has potential,” he continued. “But confidence is everything in football. Without it, even the most talented players struggle to perform. My job now is to protect them, to help them rediscover their identity, and to bring back the winning mentality Benfica is known for.”
Despite the draw, Mourinho said he saw positives in the team’s discipline and defensive organization, hinting that Benfica will return stronger once the players overcome their mental setbacks.
“We’ll improve,” he said. “It’s a process. Once the players start believing in themselves again, the goals and victories will come.”
