The highly anticipated knockout match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, a repeat of the classic 2005 final, proved to be a profoundly disappointing “one-sided affair” as Nigeria’s Flying Eagles were “whitewashed” 4-0 by Argentina U-20. The loss brings the campaign of the Nigerian side, coached by Zubairu, to a premature and “sour” end, marking yet another defeat to the South Americans.
Argentina’s dominance was evident from the opening whistle, with the final scoreline reflecting a clinical and decisive performance.
A Tale of Two Halves, Both Controlled by Argentina

The South Americans established early control, scoring two quick goals in the first half to build a comfortable cushion:
- Alejo Sarco opened the scoring for Argentina in just the 2nd minute.
- Maher Carrizo doubled the lead in the 23rd minute.
The first half concluded with Argentina holding a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Clinical Finish Seals the Victory
The second half continued in the same vein as the first. The Argentine side was relentless, adding two more goals to cement their victory and progression in the tournament:
- Maher Carrizo scored his second goal of the night in the 53rd minute.
- Mateo Silvetti completed the rout with the fourth goal in the 66th minute.
The match finished 4-0, a crushing defeat that leaves the Flying Eagles eliminated from the competition, having “failed to turn up on the night” against a superior Argentine squad.
The dream to win at this age group remains unattainable as the West African side return home empty handed.
