Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has identified four players in the Nigerian squad that could pose serious problems for his team when both sides clash in their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier next week in Uyo.
The experienced German tactician, who once managed the Super Eagles, spoke glowingly about the quality and attacking strength of the Nigerian team, naming Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi as players who can change the course of any game.
Rohr’s team continued their impressive run in Group C with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Friday, a result that kept them at the top of the standings. However, the race remains wide open as South Africa and Nigeria are still mathematically capable of snatching the group’s only automatic qualification spot for next year’s World Cup.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Rohr reflected on his history with the Super Eagles and admitted that facing Nigeria comes with mixed emotions. “Playing against Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, and Alex Iwobi is another story entirely,” he said. “These are players I know very well. They are fast, strong, and technically gifted. Our result against Rwanda gives us confidence, but we understand that facing Nigeria will be a completely different challenge.”
The 70-year-old coach also spoke about his respect for the Nigerian side, describing them as one of the most talented teams on the continent. He acknowledged that while Benin’s win over Rwanda was crucial, his players would need to show greater discipline and composure to stand any chance against the Super Eagles.
“This team has quality and experience. We know what is at stake, but we are not afraid. Nigeria is a big football nation, and I have great respect for them. However, we also believe in our project and in what we have been building over the past year,” Rohr added.
For Benin, a victory in Uyo would secure their qualification for the 2026 World Cup automatically, marking a historic achievement for the West African nation. But anything short of a win could open the door for Nigeria or South Africa to overtake them on the final day.
The clash is expected to draw a massive crowd at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, with both teams fully aware that their World Cup hopes may depend on the outcome. Nigeria will be under pressure to deliver in front of their home fans after a mixed run of results, while Rohr will be hoping his men can complete what many see as one of the most remarkable qualification stories in African football.
