Cheetahs of Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, has stated that his trip to Nigeria is not about emotions or old friendships, but about business and that business is to help Benin Republic secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced German tactician, who previously managed the Super Eagles for five years before his dismissal by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is now steering a Benin Republic side that has surprised many with their strong performance in the qualifiers.
Under Rohr’s guidance, the Cheetahs have shown remarkable progress and currently sit atop Group C with 17 points from nine matches, putting them in a commanding position to qualify for their first-ever World Cup.
Speaking to journalists in Uyo ahead of today’s clash, Rohr admitted he has deep ties with Nigeria and fond memories of his time in charge of the Super Eagles. He also acknowledged that several players in the current Nigerian squad were handed their first national team call-ups during his tenure. However, he maintained that sentiment will have no place when both teams take to the field.
Rohr emphasized that his focus is on achieving a historic result with Benin Republic, adding that his players are fully aware of the magnitude of the task before them. He expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and commitment to giving their all against a formidable Nigerian side desperate to secure qualification.
Tonight’s highly anticipated encounter between Nigeria and Benin Republic will take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
