Nigeria’s Super Eagles concluded their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday evening. The match, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, saw Victor Osimhen score a hat-trick and Frank Onyeka add a late fourth goal.
Despite the convincing win, Nigeria finished second in Group C, behind South Africa, who secured automatic qualification with a 3-0 triumph over Rwanda. The Super Eagles’ victory was enough to keep their World Cup hopes alive as they qualify third from the top four runners-up up from the nine groups.
Nigeria entered the match needing a convincing win to top their group, having kept their qualification hopes alive with a 2-1 triumph over Lesotho last weekend. Osimhen’s early goal and header just before half-time gave Nigeria a firm grip on the match, which was sealed with two more goals in the second half.
The result means Nigeria will have to navigate the playoff route to potentially qualify for the World Cup.
