The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially confirmed the cancellation of the Super Eagles’ scheduled international friendlies against Venezuela and Colombia in the USA this November. This strategic decision underscores the federation’s commitment to maximizing the team’s focus on the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs in Morocco.
In a unanimous closed-door meeting at the Sunday Dankaro House, NFF officials prioritized the playoffs following the Super Eagles’ qualification. The friendlies, originally set for November 14 against Venezuela and November 18 against Colombia, directly conflicted with the playoff schedule: a semifinal against Gabon on November 13 and the final on November 16.
A top NFF official, speaking anonymously to The Guardian, affirmed: “The friendlies have been called off because the dates clashed with the World Cup playoffs in Morocco next month. Besides, a clause in the contracts explicitly allows for cancellation if the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup playoffs.”
This move ensures players can dedicate their full energy to the high-stakes matches, boosting Nigeria’s chances in the global tournament qualifiers. Super Eagles captain Ekong has expressed strong confidence, stating the team will “give the playoffs our best shot” and is ready to handle the challenges ahead.
