Rivers United endured a disappointing evening in Maputo as they fell 1–0 to Mozambique’s Black Bulls in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round clash on Saturday.
Both sides created promising chances in the first half but failed to convert, keeping the scoreline goalless at the break. However, the hosts found the breakthrough five minutes after the restart, with Moctar Diallo striking home the decisive goal.
The Pride of Rivers will now look to overturn the deficit when they host the reverse fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo next Sunday.
The aggregate winner of the tie will advance to the lucrative group stage of the continental competition.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representative, Remo Stars, are set to face Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on Sunday at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.
