In a move aimed at revitalizing sports infrastructure and empowering the youth in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke has appointed his nephew and global Afrobeats sensation, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as Chairman of the newly established Osun Sports Trust Fund.
The announcement, made public on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, underscores the Adeleke administration’s commitment to positioning sports as a cornerstone of youth engagement and economic growth in the state. Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, who also serves as Commissioner for Sports, confirmed the appointment in an official statement, highlighting Davido’s immediate acceptance of the role.
“Davido has been appointed to chair the Sports Trust Fund, and he did not hesitate in accepting the appointment,” Adewusi stated. He emphasized that the fund is designed to attract investments from philanthropists, private sector players, and sports enthusiasts both within Nigeria and internationally, ensuring sustainable financing for sports development. Adewusi expressed confidence that Davido’s global influence and extensive network would bring unprecedented visibility and substantial funding to Osun’s sports ecosystem.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to overhaul the state’s sports sector. Plans are already in advanced stages for the creation of the Osun State Sports Commission, which will centralize sports administration, policy implementation, and development efforts. Complementing this, the ongoing renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium is progressing swiftly, with the government pledging to elevate it to Olympic standards. The upgraded facility is expected to host national competitions and draw international events, fostering talent nurturing and community participation.
Governor Adeleke’s administration has reiterated its dedication to making sports a vital pillar for youth empowerment and local economic stimulation. “Davido’s involvement is expected to attract substantial funds that will significantly impact the growth of sports in Osun,” Adewusi added, noting the singer’s enthusiasm for contributing to his home state’s progress.
While the appointment has sparked discussions on social media—ranging from celebrations of Davido’s star power to critiques of familial ties in governance—the Osun government maintains that his selection is strategic, leveraging his reach to mobilize resources for lasting change.
