Nigeria’s Super Falcons coach, Justin Madugu, has cautioned his players to stay grounded ahead of Tuesday’s second leg clash against the Amazons of Benin Republic in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Despite holding a 2 to 0 advantage from the first leg in Lomé, secured through strikes from Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo, the coach insists the job is far from done.
Speaking on Monday through the Nigeria Football Federation, Madugu stressed that his team will approach the return fixture in Abeokuta with complete seriousness.
“Benin showed they are a strong side with several foreign based players. We know it will not be easy, so we are preparing to give our best. Our goal remains to qualify for the WAFCON and continue our journey toward the 2027 World Cup in Brazil,” he said.
Madugu acknowledged the quality of the Beninoise squad, which features about ten professionals playing across Europe and North Africa, and warned against complacency.
“No team in Africa should be underestimated anymore,” he noted. “We are taking every detail seriously and will fight to finish the job.”
The Falcons, 10 time African champions, resumed training on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, where the decisive leg will kick off by 4 p.m.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie is expected to start again, supported by defenders Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin and Ashley Plumptre. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Deborah Abiodun and Taiwo Afolabi will likely control the midfield, while Ihezuo, Okoronkwo and Folashade Ijamilusi are set to lead the front line.
Madugu also has attacking reinforcements at his disposal, including Asisat Oshoala, Joy Omewa and Kafayat Mafisere, who could feature depending on the game’s flow.
The aggregate winner will secure a place in the 14th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, billed for Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
With their eyes on both continental and global success, the Falcons are determined to reaffirm their dominance and bring another ticket home for Nigeria.
