Chelsea star Alejandro Garnacho has finally shed light on the reasons behind his surprising switch from Manchester United to Stamford Bridge during the last summer transfer window.
The Argentina international’s move to the west London club raised several eyebrows, especially considering how highly he was rated at Old Trafford. Garnacho had become a fan favourite at United with his explosive pace and flair, but reports later revealed that his relationship with manager Ruben Amorim had deteriorated, ultimately forcing a move away from the club.
Speaking in an interview with Sports Illustrated, the 21-year-old confirmed that his decision to join Chelsea was influenced by his desire for a fresh challenge and a more suitable environment to develop his game. He also praised Blues manager Enzo Maresca for the role he played in convincing him to make the move.
“When I spoke with the club and with Maresca, he was very clear about his plans and the kind of football he wants to play,” Garnacho said. “He showed me videos, explained his system, and told me where he believes I can fit in. For me, that was very important. It’s a big chance to improve as a player, and I believe Chelsea is the right place for that.”
The young winger added that Maresca’s style of play which focuses on quick transitions, possession-based football, and attacking creativity perfectly matches his own strengths. “At Chelsea, I feel like I can express myself more. The coach gives me freedom to attack, to take on defenders, and to make mistakes while learning. That’s something every young player needs,” he explained.
Garnacho’s early performances for Chelsea have already shown glimpses of his potential. Despite Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Sunderland over the weekend, the Argentine found the back of the net with a well-taken finish, underlining his growing influence in the team.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester United, Garnacho avoided direct criticism but hinted that his development had stalled under Amorim. “Sometimes in football, you need to make tough decisions. I have a lot of respect for United and what they did for me, but I also needed to think about my growth and happiness as a player,” he said.
