A collective sigh of relief swept across Anfield on Saturday as defending Premier League champions Liverpool secured a vital 2-0 victory against an in-form Aston Villa side, finally putting a halt to a disastrous run of form that had seen them suffer four consecutive league defeats (and six losses in their last seven games across all competitions).
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch gave manager Arne Slot a crucial win, lifting the Reds to third place in the table and providing a much-needed shot of confidence ahead of crucial Champions League and Premier League fixtures.
Salah Reaches Historic Milestone in Crucial Win
The breakthrough came at a crucial time just before the half-time whistle, thanks in part to an uncharacteristic error from the Aston Villa defense.
The Opener: In first-half stoppage time, Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez misplaced a pass while trying to play out from the back, gifting the ball directly to Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian calmly slotted home into an unguarded net, scoring his 250th goal for the club.
A Club Legend: Salah joins only Ian Rush and Roger Hunt as the third player in Liverpool’s history to reach this incredible milestone. The goal also ensured Liverpool did not concede first for the first time in seven matches.
Gravenberch Seals the Points
Villa, who had been on a four-game winning streak under Unai Emery, started the match brightly, even hitting the post through Morgan Rogers early on. However, they struggled to recover after the interval.
Liverpool doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Ryan Gravenberch, returning from an ankle injury, fired a shot from the edge of the box that took a decisive deflection off Villa defender Pau Torres, leaving Martinez stranded.
The victory was the most significant under Arne Slot’s recent tenure, not just for the points but for securing the team’s first clean sheet in 11 games. Slot acknowledged the element of luck, noting that Villa had hit the woodwork, but praised his players’ commitment.
“The margins are small every single game… we got a bit lucky which hasn’t happened recently. Our second goal was a deflection. But from start to finish the players showed up.”
The result halted Liverpool’s slide down the table and reduced the gap to leaders Arsenal to seven points, providing a platform to rebuild their title defense.
Up Next: Real Madrid Awaits
Liverpool’s immediate focus now turns to European action before a huge domestic clash. The Reds face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 4, before a critical Premier League encounter with Manchester City next Sunday.
