Victor Osimhen walked off the Johan Cruijff ArenA with the Champions League match ball in his arm and the spotlight fully on him after scoring all three goals in Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory over Ajax on Wednesday night.
The Super Eagles forward opened the scoring in the 59th minute. He found open space behind the Ajax defenders and connected perfectly with a floated pass from Leroy Sane to give Galatasaray the lead.
A few moments later, Osimhen kept his composure from the penalty spot twice. He placed both penalties into the net within a short period of time and completed his first ever Champions League hattrick. Each goal increased the pressure on Ajax and confirmed Galatasaray’s control of the match.
This latest performance takes his goal count in the Champions League this season to six which puts him ahead of Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe who are all on five goals each. Osimhen now sits alone at the top of the competition’s scoring table and continues to attract global attention for his consistency and finishing ability.
He had already scored against Liverpool and also hit the net twice against Bodo Glimt in previous Champions League fixtures. With this hattrick, he has now become the highest scoring Nigerian in UEFA club competitions with a total of 25 goals which takes him above Obafemi Martins who previously held the record with 23.
