Gabon’s head coach, Thierry Mouyouma, has shared insights into his team’s tactical plan ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
The decisive playoff match is set to be held on Thursday in Rabat, Morocco. The winner of the tie will go on to face either Cameroon or DR Congo in the next round.
Speaking to the media before the clash, Mouyouma explained that Gabon’s strategy will center around controlling possession and dictating the tempo of the game, especially in midfield.
“One of the keys to this match is our ability to control both the game and the midfield,” Mouyouma told reporters during a press briefing.
He added that Gabon’s main objective is to maintain possession effectively and move the ball with purpose rather than for show.
“I want us to hold onto the ball more, not just for possession’s sake, but to dominate play in our own half and progress collectively as a unit,” he said.
The coach stressed that maintaining control in Nigeria’s half of the pitch would be vital to achieving their goal of advancing.
“We must solve the issue of game control – ensuring we dictate play in the opponent’s territory. That will bring us closer to scoring, and for this match, all we need is one goal to qualify,” he added.
Mouyouma concluded by noting that this disciplined and possession-based plan represents the tactical approach prepared by Gabon’s technical team for the crucial encounter.
