The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has dismissed circulating reports alleging that Barau FC midfielder, Abraham Nana, was attacked and had his throat slit during Saturday’s Matchday 12 fixture against Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the NPFL said it decided to address the matter publicly to correct misleading reports spreading online about a supposed violent assault.
According to the league’s clarification, the situation was exaggerated. It explained that the player was struck by an object thrown from the stands, which caused an injury but did not involve any stabbing or use of a weapon. Nana was promptly attended to by medical staff on the pitch, leading to a brief halt in the game before play resumed.
“The claims that Barau FC’s Abraham Nana had his throat slit are entirely unfounded and false,” the NPFL emphasized in its statement.
The organization also noted that its situation room, responsible for real-time monitoring of all NPFL fixtures through match commissioners, was in constant communication with both clubs and received direct updates as the event unfolded.
“This monitoring system enables us to supervise games closely and respond swiftly to any disruptions,” the NPFL added.
Following post-match reviews, the league confirmed that disciplinary measures have been taken against Katsina United after reports from the referee and Match Commissioner pointed to security failures and unruly fan behavior.
“The NPFL remains committed to enforcing league regulations and ensuring that all matches are played in a safe and competitive atmosphere,” the statement concluded.
