Nigeria powered into the final phase of the 2026 World Cup qualifying play-offs after sweeping past Gabon with a 4–1 win on Thursday night.
The Super Eagles qualified for the mini-tournament as one of the strongest runners-up from the main group stage, finishing behind South Africa in Group C. Against Gabon, Eric Chelle’s players controlled the tempo from kickoff but could not convert their dominance into an early goal. They also survived a nervy VAR review on a Bright Osayi-Samuel challenge, which the referee eventually ruled against awarding a penalty.
The deadlock finally broke in the 78th minute when Adams Akor reacted sharply to a loose ball and pushed it into an empty net. Gabon, however, struck back with ten minutes left as Mario Lemina’s shot took a wicked deflection and slipped past Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria took full control once the match moved into extra time. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead after linking perfectly with Wilfred Ndidi, and Victor Osimhen sealed the night with a well-taken brace that ended Gabon’s hopes.
The Super Eagles now await the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo as they chase the single African slot for the intercontinental playoff in March 2026.
