Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has criticized Wilfred Ndidi for his role in the goal that allowed the Democratic Republic of Congo to draw level during Sunday’s 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff final. Nigeria eventually fell four to three on penalties after the match finished one all following extra time, a result that ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching next year’s tournament.
Nigeria had taken an early lead when Frank Onyeka’s effort deflected into the net, but the advantage did not last. DR Congo equalized through Mechak Elia, who pounced on a loose ball inside the Nigerian penalty area. According to Ikpeba, the sequence began with an avoidable mistake from Ndidi.
Speaking after the match, Ikpeba expressed frustration over the midfielder’s decision making in that moment. He noted that Ndidi had the chance to either bring the ball under control or play it out safely for a goal kick. Instead, his touch directed the ball into a dangerous area, allowing Elia to react first and punish the Super Eagles.
Ikpeba suggested that this was not the first time Ndidi’s hesitation in high pressure situations had drawn criticism. He pointed to younger players like Benjamin Frederick, who he believes might have handled the situation with more composure. He added that moments like these are part of football, yet they often determine the outcome of important matches.
After Elia’s equalizer, Congo gained confidence and gradually took control of the game. The Leopards maintained their rhythm through extra time and held their nerve in the penalty shootout. Nigeria’s hopes slipped away as Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi failed to convert their kicks, while Congo advanced to the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.
Although the World Cup dream has ended, Nigeria will now turn their attention to the Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Morocco next year. The tournament offers the Super Eagles an opportunity to restore confidence and reconnect with a fan base that expected far more from this qualifying campaign.
