The Nigeria Football Federation has promised sweeping reforms after issuing a formal apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and to Nigerians in the wake of the Super Eagles’ failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The national team was defeated by the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties in Sunday’s Africa Play-off Final in Rabat, a result that confirmed Nigeria’s absence from football’s biggest stage for the second tournament in a row.
In its statement, the Federation expressed profound sadness, acknowledging the widespread frustration and disappointment across the country. The NFF described football as a unifying force for millions of Nigerians and admitted that falling short of qualification had left a deep emotional impact. According to the Federation, the dressing room was filled with pain and silence after the defeat, with players and staff fully aware of the expectations placed upon them.
The NFF extended gratitude to the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the National Assembly, government ministries, various agencies, Nigeria’s diplomatic partners, the media and supporters who remained committed throughout the qualifying campaign. The Federation emphasized that such support would be crucial as the national team begins its rebuilding process.
Looking ahead, the NFF stated that preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco will serve as the first step toward recovery. The tournament is expected to provide an opportunity for reflection, restructuring and renewed purpose. A thorough review of both technical and administrative shortcomings has been promised, with the Federation pledging to confront all areas that contributed to the World Cup setback.
In its message, the NFF assured Nigerians that decisive action will be taken to restore confidence in the Super Eagles and to elevate the national team’s standing on the global stage. The Federation insisted that this moment, though painful, would mark the beginning of a determined effort to ensure that Nigerian football rises again.
