Super Eagles head coach, Eric Sékou Chelle, has released his final list of players for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations, with the tournament set to kick off in Morocco in just ten days. The squad features a blend of established stars and several newcomers making their first appearance in a major national team tournament.
Chelle named Stanley Nwabali as one of the three goalkeepers, alongside Amas Obasogie and a recalled Francis Uzoho. The defensive line will include familiar faces such as Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi and Bright Osayi-Samuel. Chidozie Awaziem and Igoh Ogbu also make the cut, while England-based Ryan Alebiosu is handed his maiden call-up.
In midfield, the coach sticks with the tried-and-tested Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi, while handing opportunities to Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Tochukwu Nnadi, and Italy-based Ebenezer Akinsanmiro. Israel’s Usman Muhammed completes the group.
The forward line is led by Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze. They are joined by Simon Moses, Chidera Ejuke, Akor Adams, Cyriel Dessers, and the returning Paul Onuachu. Croatia-based Salim Fago Lawal receives his first senior invitation.
Before heading to Morocco, the Super Eagles will face Egypt’s Pharaohs in a warm-up match scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, at the Cairo International Stadium. The team will then jet directly from Cairo to Fès on December 18 to settle into their Group C base.
Nigeria begins its quest for a fourth continental title on December 23 against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars. The Eagles later face Tunisia on December 27 and round off the group stage with a clash against Uganda on December 30.
