Inter Milan capitalized on stunning slips from their rivals to climb to the top of Serie A on a chaotic Sunday, turning what was already a thrilling title race into an absolute nail-biter heading into the festive break.
In a day packed with surprises, the Nerazzurri secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Genoa, with goals from Yann Bisseck and captain Lautaro Martínez proving decisive despite a late consolation from the host. The win propelled Simone Inzaghi’s side to 33 points after 15 matches, leapfrogging the chasing pack.
Earlier in the day, prior leaders AC Milan were held to a frustrating 2-2 draw at San Siro against resilient Sassuolo. Teenage sensation Davide Bartesaghi scored twice for the Rossoneri, but they couldn’t hold on as the visitors fought back for a valuable point.
The biggest shock came in Udine, where defending champions Napoli suffered a 1-0 defeat to mid-table Udinese. Jurgen Ekkelenkamp’s stunning curled effort sealed the upset, leaving Antonio Conte’s men stuck on 31 points and missing a golden opportunity to reclaim top spot.
Hellas Verona added to the afternoon’s excitement with a 2-1 comeback win at Fiorentina, further highlighting the unpredictability of this season’s campaign
AS Roma, who did not play this weekend (their match against Como is scheduled for Monday), hold fourth place with 27 points from just 14 games – meaning a victory tomorrow would bring them within striking distance of the top three.
Current Serie A Top Four (After Matchday 15)
- Inter Milan – 33 points (15 matches played, GD +20)
- AC Milan– 32 points (15 MP, GD +11)
- Napoli– 31 points (15 MP, GD +9)
- AS Roma– 27 points (14 MP, GD +7)
This extraordinarily tight battle at the top – with three historic giants separated by only two points – has pundits hailing it as one of the most compelling Scudetto races in years. With the Supercoppa Italiana looming and the second half of the season to come, every point will be precious.
Inter may somehow sit at the top tonight, but with Milan and Napoli breathing down their necks and Roma lurking, the fight for the 2025/26 title is wide open.
Italian football fans have plenty to look forward to in 2026.
