The Super Eagles will begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against the Taifa Stars with a familiar face in charge of proceedings.
The Confederation of African Football has confirmed Mauritanian official Dahane Beida as the referee for Tuesday’s Group match in Morocco.
Nigeria are chasing a fourth continental crown and will kick off their tournament journey at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, a venue expected to be packed for the encounter.
Beida, 33, is a FIFA-accredited referee and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s top officials. However, his appointment has sparked discussion among Nigerian fans due to past experience. He was the man in the middle during the 2023 AFCON final, where Nigeria were beaten 2–1 by hosts Ivory Coast.
Beyond that final, Beida’s résumé is solid. He officiated several matches at the 2024 Olympic Games, including two involving eventual champions Spain, and was also selected for duties at the FIFA Club World Cup, handling games featuring European heavyweights.
Although some supporters may view his return as an uncomfortable reminder, there is little suggestion that officiating played a decisive role in that final defeat. Nigeria go into this fixture as clear favourites and will be focused on starting their Moroccan campaign with a strong, convincing performance.
For the Super Eagles, the message is simple: control the game, avoid distractions, and take maximum points against Tanzania to set the tone for AFCON 2025.
