Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s chances of lifting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Morocco.
Troost-Ekong was initially included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the tournament but announced his retirement from international football shortly before head coach Éric Chelle released the final list.
Despite stepping away from the team, the experienced centre-back believes the Super Eagles have what it takes to make a deep run at the competition and challenge for the title.
Taking to social media as Nigeria’s campaign kicked off, Troost-Ekong pledged his full support for the squad and voiced belief in their collective strength and national pride.
“As the Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey, I wish them nothing but success. I’ll be backing them all the way. I believe in this team, our country, and what we can achieve together,” he wrote.
The 32-year-old remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated AFCON players in recent times. He was named Player of the Tournament at the last edition held in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up.
Troost-Ekong featured in three Africa Cup of Nations finals for Nigeria and played a key leadership role during his international career, earning respect both on and off the pitch.
Nigeria will be hoping to build on recent performances as they target a fourth continental title in Morocco.
