Mohamed Salah demonstrated his world-class quality yet again as he delivered a stunning 91st-minute goal to secure a 2–1 comeback win for Egypt against Zimbabwe in their opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The record seven-time champions had to show incredible resolve at the Adrar Stadium after falling behind early to a resilient Zimbabwe side that looked determined to spoil the tournament favorites’ debut.
The match started with an unexpected turn of events in the 20th minute when Zimbabwe took a surprising lead. Prince Dube managed to capitalize on a cross from Emmanuel Jalai, firing the ball past Mohamed El Shenawy and shocking the Egyptian supporters. This goal forced the Pharaohs into a difficult position, and their frustration was evident throughout the remainder of the first half as they struggled to penetrate a disciplined Zimbabwean defense led by veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi.
The momentum changed significantly in the second half when Egypt’s persistent pressure finally paid off. In the 64th minute, Omar Marmoush provided the much-needed breakthrough by cutting in from the left wing and scoring a brilliant individual goal from a narrow angle. This equalizer shifted the energy of the match, setting the stage for a frantic finale where Egypt pushed forward in search of all three points.
As the game entered stoppage time and appeared to be heading toward a draw, Mohamed Salah stepped up to provide the defining moment of the evening. After receiving a headed pass from Mostafa Mohamed inside the penalty area, the Liverpool star skillfully turned past his defender and struck a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. The goal sparked wild celebrations and ensured that Egypt began their campaign with a crucial victory.
This result places Egypt in a strong position within Group B, where they now sit level at the top with South Africa. Head coach Hossam Hassan praised his team’s perseverance after the match, noting that while opening games are often complicated, the squad’s focus remained sharp until the very end. The Pharaohs will now shift their attention to a highly anticipated encounter against South Africa on December 26, which is expected to be a pivotal match in determining the final group standings.
