Former Mali head coach and current Nigeria manager, Eric Chelle, has praised the Africa Cup of Nations, describing the competition as superior to domestic leagues in Europe.
Chelle believes African football has made huge progress and insists the continent only needs to invest more in developing its coaches to compete fully with Europe and the rest of the world.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, the Nigerian coach urged stakeholders to take football administration on the continent more seriously.
“Africa must build its own football identity. For me, this AFCON is even better than what we see in European leagues. The quality here is special,” Chelle said.
Victory in their next match would see Chelle’s team move to the top of their group and secure qualification for the knockout phase of the tournament.
Nigeria will be looking to key players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze and Akor Adams to deliver a positive result on Saturday.
In their opening fixture against Tanzania, goals from Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman sealed the win, although Osimhen missed several chances in front of goal.
