Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has admitted he is facing a major selection dilemma ahead of Nigeria’s Round of 16 match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Malian tactician rang the changes for Tuesday’s final Group C fixture against Uganda, making seven alterations to his starting XI. Only Victor Osimhen, who wore the captain’s armband, alongside Bruno Onyemaechi and Calvin Bassey, kept their places in the team.
Despite the wholesale changes, Nigeria delivered a convincing 3–1 victory over the Cranes, with several fringe players seizing their opportunity to impress.
Midfielder Raphael Onyedika was the standout performer, scoring twice in the second half, while Samuel Chukwueze registered two assists. Paul Onuachu also caught the eye with his link-up play alongside Osimhen in attack.
Other players, including Ryan Alebiosu, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Igoh Ogbu, also put in strong performances, further strengthening their case for selection.
Speaking after the match, Chelle said the depth in his squad has given him plenty to think about, describing it as a positive problem to have.
“I have many options now because everyone can play and make an impact in this team. For me, that is a very good situation,” Chelle said.
Nigeria’s convincing win over Uganda underlined their squad strength as they prepare for the knockout phase of the tournament.
