Former Nigeria international Femi Opabunmi has called on players in the Super Eagles squad to model their attitude and commitment on that of Victor Osimhen, describing the striker as a standard others should aspire to.
Opabunmi, who was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the 2001 FIFA U17 World Cup where he scored five goals and helped the country reach the final, praised Osimhen’s work rate, mentality and passion whenever he represents the national team.
Speaking on ThePlayzone podcast, the former winger expressed concern over what he sees as a decline in effort levels within the current Super Eagles setup.
“They can achieve success if they are open to thinking in new ways,” Opabunmi said. “When you watch the Nigerian national team now, the players aren’t putting in as much effort as they used to.”
He singled out Osimhen for special praise, noting the forward’s intensity and commitment on the pitch.
“When Osimhen runs back and forth on the field, you can see he plays with a lot of passion, just like he does at Galatasaray,” he added. “If other players follow his example and put in the same effort, we can compete with any team at the Africa Cup of Nations.”
Opabunmi also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances at the tournament, backing the Super Eagles to go all the way if the squad fully commits to the cause.
“I believe we can win the trophy and bring it back home. I think they will win in Morocco,” he said.
Nigeria will continue their AFCON campaign against Mozambique at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on Monday, January 5, as they push for a strong run in the competition.
