Pape Gueye delivered a commanding performance as Senegal recovered from an early setback to defeat Sudan 3-1 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Sudan stunned the defending champions inside six minutes when Aamir Abdallah curled a superb strike past Edouard Mendy after creating space outside the penalty area.
Senegal reacted quickly, increasing the tempo as Ismaïla Sarr and Sadio Mané both threatened. Sudan remained dangerous on the counter, with Mohamed Eisa forcing Mendy into a smart save.
The breakthrough arrived when Gueye drilled home from the edge of the box to level the score. Senegal briefly thought they had completed the turnaround, but Sarr’s goal was ruled out for offside, and a penalty appeal was dismissed.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Gueye struck again, calmly finishing to give the Teranga Lions a 2-1 lead at the break.
Sudan attempted another fast start after halftime but struggled as Senegal took control of possession and territory. Their challenge grew tougher when Mustafa Karshom was forced off through injury.
After missing several chances to put the game beyond reach, Senegal finally sealed the result when substitute Ibrahim Mbaye raced onto Mané’s pass and beat the goalkeeper at his near post moments after coming on.
Krépin Diatta was later sent off for a late challenge, but it had little effect on the outcome as Senegal comfortably saw out the closing stages.
The victory extends Senegal’s unbeaten run to nine competitive matches and sets up a quarter-final clash with either Mali or Tunisia, while Sudan exit the tournament after a brave display.
