Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Liam Rosenior as their new head coach, handing the Englishman a deal that runs until 2032.
The 41 year old arrives at Stamford Bridge after a short but impressive spell with French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. Rosenior had earlier confirmed during a farewell media briefing in France that he had reached a verbal agreement to succeed Enzo Maresca, with Chelsea finalising the move shortly afterwards.
His appointment marks a return to English football following previous managerial stints at Derby County and Hull City.
Speaking through Chelsea’s official channels, Rosenior described the role as a huge honour, stressing his pride at being trusted with leading a club he believes has a strong winning tradition. He said his focus will be on preserving Chelsea’s identity while building a team that reflects the club’s values and continues to compete for trophies.
Rosenior also thanked the club’s hierarchy for their confidence in him, promising total commitment to delivering success on the pitch.
Chelsea moved quickly in the market after parting ways with Maresca on New Year’s Day. The Italian coach’s exit followed growing tension with the club’s leadership, including concerns over his reported discussions with Manchester City about a possible future role there, as well as disputes over squad management and medical protocols.
There was also frustration over Maresca’s reluctance to fully embrace Chelsea’s youthful squad, with constant rotation often affecting team stability.
Under the ownership of BlueCo, Rosenior becomes Chelsea’s fourth permanent head coach since the takeover in 2022.
The former England youth international earned praise at Strasbourg by working with a young squad, guiding the club to a seventh place finish in Ligue 1 last season and securing qualification for the knockout stages of the UEFA Conference League.
Explaining his decision to leave France, Rosenior admitted it was an emotional choice but one he felt he could not refuse. He described the Chelsea job as a rare opportunity at a world class club, adding that while he will always hold Strasbourg close to his heart, certain offers are impossible to turn down.
Strasbourg president Marc Keller paid tribute to Rosenior, thanking him and his staff for their contribution and acknowledging the progress made during his time at the club.
Rosenior is now expected to begin work immediately as Chelsea prepare for the next phase of their long term project built around young, high potential players.
